Introduction

This is a two days workshop on "hacking keyboard" with Massimo Banzi. By hacking computer keyboards and using the micro controller of the keyboard we tried to make an interactive installation which can be put at public spaces.

Hacking keyboard

A micro controller is sandwiched between two layers of plastic in the keyboard. Image below shows plastic layer and sandwiched micro controller.


There are different connectors given on the micro controller. Different combination of connectors give different output on the computer screen.





Exhibitor

Exhibitor is a big screen placed at public spaces like piazzas, squares, shopping malls etc. The main idea is to attract people to public spaces and play with the interactive screen.

How it works?
A camera is on the top of the screen which captures their images and shows on the screen. The micro controllers are put on the floor. As people starts walking through the screen, connectors of the micro controllers are pressed and screen starts getting blurred.

Working prototype was made on the laptop which is shown below.


Micro controllers near the screen has different function, so as the connectors near the screen are pressed, screen starts getting clear.




Here total functioning is done by micro controllers of the keyboards instead of using motion sensors or other sensors
. Effects are not because of the motion of people but it is because of movements of the feet of different people.Different effects also appears on the back ground of the screen according to the movement of people.

Different effects.
- changing the back ground color.
- clouds starts moving in the background.
- more than one images of the same person appears
on the screen at the same time.
- male starts getting hairs like female and female starts getting bald.
- actual size of the body increases on the screen
and people start looking fat and thin.
More and more effects can be put according to the place of the installation.
